Interim Lovejoy Police Chief Wayne Woods is now the city’s permanent chief after the mayor and city council made the announcement at their June meeting.

According to Mayor Bobby Cartwright, the city advertised the position in April and received eight applications. An extensive interview process included help from Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill, Clayton County Commission Chairman Jeff Turner and Hampton Police Chief Derrick Austin, Cartwright said with gratitude.

Woods’ 21-year law enforcement career led him to Lovejoy in Nov. 2014 when he became a detective for the department. He was named interim chief in Feb. 2017.

Mark Harris had been chief since the Lovejoy Police Department was started in 2010.
